此反應的機理與Baeyer-Villiger氧化重排反應的機理有些相似。首先是過酸與醇酯化成過酸酯,然後一個烴基從碳原子遷移到氧上,形成碳正離子,酸根離子離去。該碳正離子經水解即得到相應的酮和醇。

基團遷移順序為:叔丁基異丙基乙基甲基,越能穩定碳正離子的基團越容易遷移,這說明遷移過程過渡態中遷移基團帶有部分正電荷。

連續Criegee重排(Consecutive Criegee rearrangement)是指酸性介質中用該反應合成原酸酯[3]
